The Mechanical Side This side of photo taking has the knowledge of how to use the camera, setting the right settings like ISO, aperture, etc, and other technical info like that.
The Artistic Side This side of photo taking is where the photographer shows his or her creativity through different ways. The artistic side is what makes a photographer have different styles and ways of showing their message than all the others.
Because photography is not completely one or the other you must know both the mechanical and artistic side of taking photos in order to be a good photographer. The mechanical side is fine and will help you to be more artistic and expressive. However, having only mechanical skills in photography will make your photos boring and uninteresting. Also, having only creative skills but no technical knowledge will prevent you from expanding your horizons and being able to be fully expressive.
After getting good at the technical part you should work on the creative part. To get better at the creative side of photography first you should find out what your style is. Your photo style is very related to your personality. The style is the way you will convey your messages that you tell. If you have a magical style your photos may end up with a style that is very whimsical.
When you take a photo you want to have an idea of what you want to say in your photo. All great photos usually are taken because the photographer wants to say something. A photo is another language and way of communicating something. The hard part about this is finding what you want to say initially.
It will be hard thinking of what you want to say in your photos at first but after that first idea comes up more will come. After you get that idea then you can create the photo. This is where the technical skills will really help you fully convey your message with no limits.
